Aerosol Valve Types, Structures & Applications for Manufacturers

2025-08-07

For aerosol manufacturers, choosing the right aerosol valve is the key to competitiveness. From household cleaners to medical inhalers, the structure and type of aerosol valves have a direct impact on sealing, precision, experience and compliance. In this article, we have sorted out their core structures, classifications and applications to provide a full chain of references from selection to implementation, which will help you match your needs, reduce costs, increase efficiency and enhance recognition.

1. Core structure: a “miniature system” of precision collaboration

Although the structure of the aerosol valve is small, it integrates multiple functions such as sealing, volume control, power transmission, etc. The core components include:

Sealing assembly: composed of sealing cap (fixed to the mouth of the can) and inner and outer sealing rings, the outer sealing ring ensures static sealing of the mouth of the can, while the inner sealing ring realizes dynamic sealing when the valve stem moves, double protection to prevent leakage. The outer seal ensures static sealing of the mouth of the can, while the inner seal realizes dynamic sealing when the valve stem moves.

Valve chamber and valve stem: the valve chamber is the “center” of dose control, the volume determines the amount of single spray; the valve stem connects the actuator and the valve chamber, opens the pathway when pressed, and resets to close after release.

Spring: Provides reset power to ensure that the valve stem springs back quickly to ensure sealing immediately after spraying.

Drain pipe: to transport the material in the tank to the valve chamber, non-liquid products (such as lighter gas, mousse) can be omitted.

Special design: For corrosive materials (e.g. acidic cleaners), the valve chamber and sealing ring are made of corrosion-resistant materials (e.g. PTFE); for high-viscosity products (e.g. caulking), the valve chamber is equipped with a large-diameter valve chamber and a one-piece valve stem to avoid clogging.

2. Type Classification: Customized “Function Module” on Demand

The types of aerosol valves can be divided in multiple dimensions, each corresponding to a specific scenario:

(1) Control by Spray Volume

Metering Valve: releases a fixed dose (error ≤ ±5%) with each press, suitable for dosage-sensitive products such as medical inhalers (e.g., asthma medication), essential oil sprays, and so on.

Continuous valve: continuous spraying with constant pressure, suitable for insecticides, paint spraying and other scenes that require large area coverage.

Full release valve: single operation to release the entire contents, mostly used for disposable indoor insecticides.

(2) According to the direction of use

Upright valve: upright use, triggered by vertical pressing, widely used in hairspray, air freshener, car cleaner and other daily products.

Inverted valve: support inverted operation, the actuator pushes backward design, suitable for mousse, carpet shampoo and other products that need to be sprayed deep into the crevice.

360° Valve: Full-angle spraying (0°-360°), divided into steel ball type (suitable for LPG/DME projectile) and mallet type (suitable for nitrogen/carbon dioxide), used for automotive engine cleaners, high-pressure lubricants, etc.

(3) By structure and material

Male / Female Valve: Male valve stem protrudes and the actuator is fitted on it (e.g. common insecticides); Female valve stem is integrated with the actuator (e.g. high end perfume), which makes the structure more compact.

Fixed cap material: steel cap with strong pressure resistance (for industrial high-pressure canisters), aluminum cap is lightweight and beautiful (for personal care products).

Sizes: 1-inch, 20 mm valves for standard cans, 13 mm valves for small customized cans (e.g., portable sprays).

3. Scenario application: precise matching of function landing”

Different types of aerosol valves are adapted by characteristics to cover diversified fields:

(1) Upright valves

Features: Valve stem and mounting cup are fixed to the tank, triggered by thrust actuator, stable operation.

Applications:

Household products (air fresheners, glass cleaners);

Insecticides (household sprays, mosquito repellents);

Automotive products (interior cleaners, tire shine);

Personal care (hairspray, sunscreen spray).

(2) Inverted Valve

Features: Mounting cup fixed, actuator can be pushed upside down, suitable for inverted use scenarios.

Applications:

Mousse (hair styling, foam cleansing);

Road marking paint (inverted spraying on the ground);

Carpet shampoo, dust mite remover (deep crevice cleaning).

(3) 360° Valve

Classification: Steel ball type, mallet type, both support multi-angle spraying.

Steel ball type: relies on steel ball sealing, suitable for LPG, DME and other spraying agents.

Mallet type: Positioning of the suction tube by means of a weight, suitable for high-pressure projectiles such as compressed air and nitrogen.

Applications:

Car cleaner (multi-angle cleaning of engine compartment, crevices);

Carbon dioxide-based aerosol (e.g. fire-fighting spray);

Lubricant, garden insecticide (no need to adjust the angle of the tank to spray).

(4) Power Valve

Features: Extended compression stroke, reduced inner gasket to prevent powder from clogging the valve stem.

Applications:

Antiperspirant (solid powder spray);

Therapeutic powder for medical use (e.g. wound repair powder);

Industrial gap detector (powder to mark gaps).

(5) Inclined Thrust Valve

Characteristics: Inclined direction of spray, suitable for spraying horizontal surfaces.

Applications:

Ironing Spray for Clothes (spray horizontally on the surface of the clothes);

Pre-Wash Cleaner (spray to pre-treat the stain).

(6) Valve for viscous products

Characteristics: One-piece stem + large diameter chamber for high viscosity materials.

Applications:

Polyurethane foam, caulking (for building sealing);

Food (cheese spray, cream topping, cake laminating agent).

(7) Metering Dosing Valve

Characteristics: Highly accurate control of single spray volume through stem design and chamber volume.

Applications:

Medical inhalers (asthma medication, rhinitis sprays);

Air fresheners (quantitative release of fragrance);

Aromatherapy essential oil sprays (precise dosage control).

(8) Pouch Valve

Advantages: Compressed air / nitrogen driven, environmentally safe; contents isolated in a composite pouch to avoid corrosion of the canister, adapted to aseptic needs.

Applications:

Water-based fire extinguishing agents, disinfectants (human / environmental disinfection);

Pharmaceuticals (topical sprays, seawater nasal sprays);

Food flavoring agents, industrial release agents (to avoid contact between the material and the tank).

(9) Female threaded valves

Characteristics: stem and actuator split design, can be disassembled for cleaning, suitable for high viscosity materials.

Applications:

Glue spraying, automotive paint spraying (high viscosity gels / lacquers, anti-clogging);

Individualized products with fan nozzles (e.g. art spraying).
